Well-Adjusted Kids: The Role of Chiropractic in Pediatric Health

Chiropractic has provided successful results for many children suffering from allergies, asthma, ADHD, autism, bedwetting, colic, torticollis, difficulties with breastfeeding, development, sleep, digestion and more. Participants will learn why chiropractic care is used for children and how it supports the normal functioning of the body to help children heal naturally.


“Why Play Therapy?” – Treating Trauma in Young Children

This workshop will focus on the importance of trauma-informed treatment for young children. Presenters will discuss trauma and the need for a comprehensive and developmentally sensitive definition. Presenters will emphasize the impact of trauma on child development, behavior, and social-emotional wellness and Play Therapy as an effective, developmentally appropriate treatment.

 

Restoring Joy with the Endocrine Dance

Jean A. Schweizer, PhD – Educational Director/Founder, The Center for Universal Learning

Trauma causes the Endocrine system, responsible for regulating glands and hormones, to shut down. This system is primary to learning and moving forward. This presentation explores Dr. Schweizer’s Endocrine Activation Technique, which restores this system, activating the glands naturally through whole body movement and sound, inspiring balance, harmony and joy for all ages.

Postpartum Depression and Child Maltreatment: Risk, Prevention, and Treatment Implications

Jason Jent, Ph.D. – Assistant Professor of Clinical Pediatrics/ Licensed Psychologist, University of Miami Child Protection Team

Postpartum depression (PD) significantly increases the risk for child maltreatment in infants. Further, PD negatively impacts parent-infant relationships and ultimately child developmental outcomes. Any provider who offers services to families with infants would benefit from learning additional screening, educational, and intervention strategies for caregivers who may be at-risk for postpartum depression.


Current Diagnostic and Management Challenges of Munchausen Syndrome by Proxy

John E. Wright, MD, FAAP – Medical Director, Broward County Child Protection Team

Attendees will become familiar with and review the relevant history of the phenomenon of Munchausen syndrome by proxy (medical child abuse). Roles of the medical, health care financing, child protection, mental health, legal, media, and political communities will be explored. Current challenges to optimization of outcomes in these cases will be delineated. Suggested management strategies will be offered.


I Have Been Running My Entire Life. I Am Finally Free.

Dominic Carter – Journalist and Author, “No Momma's Boy: How I Let Go of My Past and Embraced the Future”

Expanding on his Keynote address, Dominic Carter will provide a first person narrative of his experience as a child of mentally ill parent and sexual abuse victim, including the fears, questions, confusion, guilt, shame and embarrassment. He will assist participants in better understanding the perspective of child crime victims to inform their work with this population.

The Ambiguous Foster Child – Attachment, Separation, Loss & Loyalty

Susan S. Cornbluth, Psy.D. – Clinical Psychologist, Professor of Psychology, Temple University

Many foster children struggle with ambiguous loss daily. It is based on the belief that though physically separated from biological family members, foster children continue to keep them alive psychologically within their minds as they remain in foster care. Other topics discussed include foster children’s attachment trauma, separation from biological families, loss and loyalty issues.

 

The Mind of a Gang Member

This workshop will examine the risk factors that contribute to gang formation and preventive methods to reduce gang membership. Participants will learn about the continuous efforts by the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office to decrease gang activity in the county.

Immigration, Public Benefits, and Health Care Reform

Discussion will focus on the psychological, behavioral, spiritual, social environmental and secondary symptomology of childhood sexual abuse and its correlation into the life of commercial sexual exploitation. The power of choice: ambivalence, trauma bonding and repetition compulsion will be addressed. Theoretical approaches (Motivational Interviewing, EMDR , TF CBT, Narrative Therapy) used with CSEC will be reviewed.

Every year thousands of children become victims of crime-whether it’s kidnapping, violent attacks or sexual abuse. Discussion will include the types of child prostitution, issues relating to victims of child prostitution, and how to better protect children on the internet. Participants will learn the power of a victim impact statement, advocacy, the law and appropriate therapeutic interventions to assist child prostitution and sexual abuse victims, and resources/referral options available to providers and their clients.



Maltreatment in the Multi-Generational Household

Debra Gage Hurd, Ph.D. – Clinical Full Professor, University of Arkansas

This workshop will discuss the multi-generational household phenomenon and emphasize the need for child welfare professionals to be aware of abuse across generations. Participants will receive information on generational abuse, mandatory reporting of maltreatment of children and elders, and services for victims and perpetrators of abuse ages 1 to 100.

While 1 in every 3 teens will be in an abusive dating relationship, only 1 in 25 seek help from an adult. However, many teens will turn to their peers. Learn strategies for engaging youth in prevention via a successful program that has reached more than 1,000 teens in our community.

 

Understanding and Addressing Verbal Abuse

This workshop will define verbal abuse, explore its dynamics, and differentiate it from “normal” disagreement and relationship stress. Participants will learn techniques for establishing a climate in classrooms or other groupings where verbal abuse is minimized and learn strategies to recognize and manage verbal abuse when encountered in their own lives, or by clients and students.
